This is the programme as you can experience it during SymBioSE'99. The programme is packed with lectures, discussions, workshops and excursions. This year we tried to make the programme as diverse as possible which would attract biology students from every subject.

During the week a few meetings will be organised, which has not been mentioned in the programme, to discuss the future of SymBioSE and to decide in which country SymBioSE will take place next year.

Excursion Day

Today ecology at its best! Two parallel excursions combining vegetation and conservation biology, paleontology, marine biology and limnology.

Raised Bog & Drift Sand Area

A tour of two important ecological nature reserves. Do we want to control nature, and pursue a maximum diversification of species or is it better to let nature go its own way. Drift Sand Area, a desert in the middle of urban city live and Raised Bog, unnatural swampy habitats fighting to survive.

The Sea, Conquered or Restrained...

A tour of NIOO, the Dutch institute for ecological research. Demonstrations of sampling at sea and how to use a flume-tank. The following day the samples will be analysed at the Faculty in Amsterdam. Also a salt marsh and the delta-works, Europe's biggest sea restraining structure, will be visited.

Wednesday August 11

Excursion Day

Two exciting parallel excursions, one on a phenomena which you probably won't see again in this life and the second excursion is a guided tour in one of Europe's biggest nature reserves.

the Dutch Waddensea

The Dutch Waddensea is the biggest low water tidal zone in Europe you can encounter. A nature reserve with its own special flora and fauna adapted to salt and brackish water. You'll get a guided tour by specialists from the region. TIP: take some very old shoes with you.

the total Eclipse of the Sun!

This excursion probably doesn't need any explanation but we'll do it anyway. You'll leave in the middle of the night to avoid traffic. After arrival in the morning there will be a guided tour in the hills of the Belgian Ardennes and somewhere around twelve it will become dark, birds will stop singing, suddenly it's extremely quiet and night will fall! There is a maximum of participants so get your tickets soon! (you can only register for an excursion at SymBioSE'99)

Play a Game or See a Movie, maybe some Italian Vodka Drinking or is Scottish Dancing more your thing...
