How it All Began… The idea behind SymBioSE was conceived in Germany in 1996 when a group of Biology graduates decided to set up an organisation that would bring Biology students throughout Europe closer together. They realised this goal by hosting the first Symposium for Biology Students of Europe in Berlin in 1997, which was a great success. Since then there have been two more symposia, in Lisbon in 1998 and Amsterdam in 1999 when Belgium and Holland collaborated to make a very successful event. The increasingly symbiotic nature of Europe makes the need to create forums for informational exchange all the more important. Participants of SymBioSE will have the opportunity to feel integrated in the European Community in a positive and constructive way. The creation of a network of contacts for the exchange of information and ideas benefits all those involved, in other words: symbiosis. The organisation is run by and for students and now involves biology students from 13 E.U. member countries, has contact with over 175 universities, and is expanding every year. The Concept. SymBioSE's main objective is the construction of a network of contacts and websites that Biology students can consult when looking for information on biological studies such as courses, conferences, seminars, exchange opportunities, or collaboration with research. To achieve this goal SymBioSE organise an annual symposium where undergraduate and graduate biology students can meet, socialise and exchange ideas about their education, countries, and research. SymBioSE 2000, at the University of Edinburgh promises to be an equally successful event as its predecessors. Our aim is to inspire enthusiasm and motivation in our fellow students to help them to excel in their field. |
